Content is king
This past week, Sheree from Mariannhill Media set up 5 websites for Catholic bishops. We are thrilled to be part this massive leap forward…. But has caused me to think even more about the work involved.
These are some thoughts on what it will take to ensure these sites live up to the hopes we have for them.
1. Content is king attitude. – if the site offers nothing of interest and value then there will be no reason to revisit the site.
2. Accuracy – the contact details must be completely up to date and correct.
3. Visual – photos must be added regularly, tagged and labeled correctly. Photos are easily shared and are the one of the best ways to show that there is life happening.
4. Internal training – we are willing to train key chancery staff to update the site. If they are not willing to do the updating…then we will ….but ….people will have have to be trained into thinking about the site. When there is breaking news or things change, they must automatically think to let the web maintenance know about them.
5. Protocol – there needs to be accepted and known channel on how things work regarding the update up data onto the site. Who has the rights to say this should go up or this should come down.
6. Time frame – an agreed timeframe must be established for data to go live from when it was sent through to the update team. Old news is not news.
7. Social media – the website must be blended together with social media platforms.
8. Printed media – must feature the web details ….addresses and group and page names
9. Marketing – the site must be marketed at every opportunity.
10. Mobile friendly – with 547 million cellphone accounts active on the African continent it is essential that the data is easily accessible on cellphones.
…..signing off now…more to follow …comment is you think I missed anything critical.
